Ginki the Iguana

Here, if you just bear with me for a bit, you'll find pictures of Ginki, info on iguanas, and more. For now, I hope you like it.

Name: Ginki

Birthdate (approx.):  May 14, 2000
Date I bought him:  May 29, 2000
Age now (approx.):  1 year, 1 month

Gender: Male
Length: 19 inches.
Personality: extremely curious and very well behaved, tolerant of children
very individualistic- likes to go off on his own, exploring without any help
communicates what he wants in no uncertain terms, but is willing to settle for what I give him as long as he thinks I know what he wants.
rarely needs to be punished, but becomes quite submissive when he is punished. He'll just lay on your hand for a while and not move.
very good in cars- doesn't like semis- especially when they creep up on him.

Likes:  music
           the sun
           anything green
           exploring
Dislikes:  water
semis that sneak up on him

Ginki is currently starting to be trained to be a free-roaming iguana. What I mean by this is that little by little, I'm letting him out to explore around the house, but watching him so he doesn't get into trouble. He's been doing very well.

If you're interested in owning an iguana, I'd recommend it- but only if you agree to take care of it when it's a 6-7 foot long, 30-40 lbs (about) lizard with a long whip-like tail and stiff spines standing up from its neck. (There's a reason that they're called Giant Green Iguanas. ;). )  However, once you get all the equipment they need (heat rock/lamp, UV light.... tank..... etc) they are rather inexpensive and they tend to take care of themselves rather well. They can easily be left alone for a day, or up to three days. I'd recommend getting a pet sitter or taking the iguana along if you are going on a week long vacation. Ginki, at least, is quite happy just sitting on a window, watching the scenery go by. One more thing to note: If you get an iguana, chances are you'll need to tame it. This requires patience and understanding, and lots of time. Handle the iguana every day at the very least, untill it gets tame. Even then I'd handle the iguana every day- they can become quite a lot like dogs!
